The concept
CMR and SMR are recording approaches used by hard drives. They are not universal quality grades. Their suitability depends on the write pattern, rebuild exposure, and operational expectations of your specific workload.
Common mistake
Do not infer recording method from a drive family name, capacity, or retailer listing. Check current manufacturer documentation for the exact model and record the evidence in the purchase brief.
Decision rules
- For arrays, rebuild-sensitive systems, or sustained/random writes, specify CMR.
- For a light, documented single-drive archive pattern, SMR may be conditionally suitable.
- When recording method is uncertain, treat it as an unresolved compatibility requirement.

Limits
