Start with the active set
Bulk capacity and frequently active data often have different needs. Large, infrequently accessed data may favor capacity-oriented storage; active working data may justify a faster tier.
Compare the right factors
- Capacity required now and at the planning horizon.
- Read/write pattern, latency sensitivity, and concurrency.
- Endurance and sustained-write needs.
- Noise, power, physical placement, and recovery requirements.
- User-entered budget and replacement plan.
Tiering scenario
A media archive can keep most data on a bulk tier while current projects sit on a smaller fast tier. This is useful only when the workflow can identify and manage the active set.
Selection checklist
- Run the HDD vs SSD Storage Planner.
- Check whether HDD recording method fits the expected write workload.
- Confirm enclosure interfaces and actual supported drive types.
- Keep backup capacity separate from the performance tier.
Limits
Media type alone does not determine the answer. Test the critical workflow and compare current, user-entered quotes rather than relying on a permanently embedded price claim.
