Why a NAS capacity estimate needs more than one number
A NAS must have enough usable capacity for the files you expect to retain, plus room for ordinary growth and normal operations. If you use redundancy, some raw drive space is consumed by protection. If you need recovery, backup copies need separate capacity altogether.
The core method
- Measure current data that belongs on the NAS.
- Forecast a realistic planning horizon using a percentage or annual addition.
- Add a usable-capacity reserve, commonly 20% to 30% when expansion would be disruptive.
- Choose an array layout that delivers that usable target after its protection overhead.
- Allocate one or more independent backup targets separately.
Do not mix raw installed capacity with usable capacity. A four-drive layout with one drive’s worth of protection will not deliver four drives’ worth of usable space.
Worked household scenario
A household with 4 TB today, 20% annual growth for five years, and a 25% reserve needs roughly 12.4 TB of usable primary capacity. The independent backup target is not included in that number; it should be planned according to the data that must be restored and the version history desired.
Worked creator scenario
A creator adding 3.6 TB of media in a typical year should separate fast current projects from archive storage. Archive copies multiply the capacity requirement, while a fast workspace may be much smaller and have different performance needs.
Choosing a capacity class
Choose enough bays and same-size drives to meet the usable target with a credible growth path. More bays can give a smoother expansion route; larger drives can reduce the number of migrations. Neither makes a backup unnecessary.
Checklist before buying
- Confirm whether quoted capacities are decimal TB while your computer reports TiB.
- Check the array documentation for the exact supported layout and expansion behavior.
- Write down the recovery copies, their locations, and a restore-test date.
- Leave space for data checks, snapshots, and normal operational growth.
Risks and limits
Compression, deduplication, mixed drive sizes, application databases, and vendor-specific RAID behavior can change actual capacity. This guide is a planning method, not a guarantee of a particular device configuration.
