Operations guide

NAS Drive Replacement Planning

Set replacement, spare, expansion, and migration triggers before an array is under pressure.

Why plan replacements

Drive replacement is an operational task, not a prediction exercise. A documented plan reduces avoidable risk when capacity, a warning, or a failed drive forces action.

Define triggers

  • Capacity reaches the expansion threshold.
  • A drive warning appears and documented support steps call for replacement.
  • A platform limit makes a migration safer than an in-place expansion.
  • Support, warranty, or operating requirements change for the system.

Before any replacement

  1. Verify an independent backup and a recent restore test.
  2. Record the current array layout and available capacity.
  3. Check exact NAS documentation for replacement and rebuild steps.
  4. Allow time for rebuild and avoid adding unrelated workload pressure.

Use the planner

The NAS Expansion Headroom Planner sets an early capacity trigger. Pair it with the Bay, Drive Count & Capacity Planner when considering a new layout.

Limit

This guide does not predict a particular drive’s lifespan or prescribe a product. Follow the documentation for the exact hardware and keep recovery copies independent.
