What this tool helps you decide
This checker determines whether a documented bare drive and enclosure agree on physical family, storage protocol, M.2 module length, and power arrangement. It is useful when repurposing an internal disk, selecting a clone enclosure, or checking a marketplace listing whose connector photo looks plausible. The result identifies a blocking layer instead of returning a vague compatible label.
Before you start
Read the label or specification for the drive, not only the shape of its connector. Record whether it is 2.5-inch SATA, 3.5-inch SATA, M.2 SATA, or M.2 NVMe. For an M.2 module, find the four- or five-digit size such as 2280. Then locate the enclosure manual's supported protocol, lengths, and supplied power arrangement. Do not infer NVMe support from an M-key-shaped slot alone.
How the check works
The tool evaluates mechanical and electrical questions independently. A 2.5-inch SATA device needs a SATA enclosure sized for 2.5-inch media or a documented 3.5/2.5-inch carrier. A 3.5-inch disk requires the larger enclosure class and external power. M.2 modules must not exceed the enclosure's mounting length and must use a bridge that explicitly supports their SATA or NVMe protocol. A dual-protocol bridge passes either supported M.2 type.
How to interpret the result
A pass means the entered categories do not conflict; it is not a product certification. Continue checking supported capacity, sector size, operating-system requirements, cooling, TRIM or UASP behavior, and included cable. A mechanical failure means the module cannot mount as described. A protocol failure means the drive may fit but the bridge cannot communicate with it. A power failure means the planned enclosure cannot reliably start the selected 3.5-inch disk.
Worked example
An M.2 NVMe 2280 SSD paired with an NVMe-only enclosure supporting modules through 2280 passes the mechanical and protocol checks; bus power is acceptable for this categorical screen. Change only the drive to M.2 SATA and the protocol result blocks the pair even though both modules share a similar gum-stick outline. Selecting a dual-protocol M.2 bridge resolves that documented mismatch.
Assumptions and limitations
This model covers common consumer external-storage families rather than every U.2, mSATA, PCIe add-in card, SAS disk, proprietary module, keyed Wi-Fi device, or vendor whitelist. It does not inspect a product automatically. Some enclosures omit 22110 mounting points, impose capacity limits, or support only particular sector formats. The manufacturer manuals and certification records remain authoritative, and ambiguous listings should be rejected or confirmed before purchase.
