Choose a comparison only after both options meet the same requirement. Two-bay versus four-bay examines capacity, tolerance, expansion, and drive-size flexibility. NAS versus cloud for family photos compares control, recovery, operation, and remote access. 2.5GbE versus 10GbE compares complete network paths rather than treating adapter speed as application performance.
Recommended workflow
Write the non-negotiable outcome first, quantify it with the relevant tool, and then score both options on identical usable capacity, backup coverage, recovery time, workload, operating effort, and lifecycle cost. Use the comparison to expose decisive differences and missing evidence. If one option fails a required constraint, stop averaging scores and document why it left the shortlist.
What to prepare
Bring current prices, measured data and throughput, planning horizon, number of users, independent-copy requirement, acceptable outage, expansion path, maintenance ability, and exact equipment compatibility. Separate preferences from requirements. A comparison becomes misleading when the cheaper side omits drives, backup, switching, egress, power, support, or the labor needed to keep recovery dependable.
