Different classes solve different operational problems

Consumer SSDs can be sufficient for light client work, modest active data, or a measured workload with ample TBW margin. NAS-oriented drives may emphasize compatibility and sustained appliance duty. Enterprise SSDs may offer higher endurance options, telemetry, validation, and power-loss protection features, but the exact capabilities vary by model and documentation. None of these labels replaces a calculation using capacity, TBW, DWPD, existing writes, and the actual per-drive workload.

When each class can fit

A consumer SSD can be enough when measured or modeled writes sit comfortably below rating, replacement lead time is manageable, the workload is not dependent on unverified features, and independent backups exist. Consider a NAS-focused or enterprise option when cache writes are mirrored, virtual machines and logs create sustained per-drive demand, service interruption has a high cost, or compatibility, telemetry, and documented power behavior are material requirements. The decision should follow the workload, not a slogan about “professional” hardware.

Recheck the manufacturer documentation at purchase time. Endurance headroom is part of a storage plan; it is not a substitute for backups, tested restores, or a maintenance window.
